10/25/2006 Ten steps to master the art of peer review From Naturehttp://www.nature.com/naturejobs/2006/061019/full/nj7113-880b.html Ten steps to master the art of peer review. The peer-review process provides an opportunity for clinicians and scientists to train their fellows and postgraduate students as part of a one-on-one journal-club exercise. Supervisors can assess students' critical thinking and writing skills early in their careers. Consider these ten steps to teach the art of reviewing. 1) Explain how to proceed with a peer review, stressing the importance of respecting confidentiality and the rules of the journal or grant body. 2) Establish a submission deadline. The review process should take up to three hours. Set a time for final discussion before the deadline, allowing both student and supervisor time to read and review the work. 3) Adopt the right mindset. Don't accept the manuscript 'as is', and don't be hypercritical. The student might imagine that it's their own manuscript about to be rejected, and that they have the opportunity to improve it. 4) Read the manuscript once, taking rudimentary notes. 5) Follow the journal-specific author and reviewer instructions. Note those pertaining to the category of the manuscript, the word length, abstract structure and the format for references, figures and tables. 6) Verify each citation with PubMed or similar — which also gives you a chance to read generally on the topic. Highlighting minor citation errors shows that the paper has been read thoroughly. Ask the following: does the submitted work complement or duplicate the authors' and others' previous work? 7) Re-read the manuscript armed with the specific author instructions and good background knowledge. 8) Write the review envisaging that the editor is too busy to read the manuscript in-depth. Summarize the key features in a paragraph, stating the topic of the paper, what was performed, the key conclusions drawn, why this is important, and why this is a novel contribution. Strengths or problems with the manuscript or methodology should then be detailed. 9) Write all comments as if they will be seen by the authors. Although most reviewers are anonymous, caution students that a disgruntled author could recognize one's spelling variances, grammar or clichés. 10) Submit the review, telling the editor the review was written with a student and that you agree with their assessment. Show the student the submitted review as well as the editor's and other reviewers' comments. 8/19/2006 Skatinghttp://inlineskating.about.com/od/masteringthebasics/a/beginners1.htm
选择不多,只有一双inline stake(Rollerblade Zetrablade)觉得还好看, 昨天下班回家路上就把它买了。 8/14/2006 Silent running: the race to the clinicSilent running: the race to the clinicA technique for turning genes off has sparked a flurry of biotech investment. Erika Check investigates.Nature 442, 614-615(10 August 2006) | doi:10.1038/442614a; Published online 9 August 2006 Silence is golden — at least, that's what two US biotechnology companies are hoping. They aim to reap the rewards of bringing a method for silencing genes into the clinic, where they claim it could lead to treatments for everything from viral diseases to cancer. The technique, known as RNA interference or RNAi, could offer a safe and effective way of turning off a gene. And, although it is early days, many see it as a likely moneyspinner for the biotechnology industry. "It is a while away from being an impactful sector," says Sapna Srivastava, an analyst at Morgan Stanley in New York. "But it has the potential to be really big." Two well-funded companies are leading the way for now: Alnylam Pharmaceuticals of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Sirna Therapeutics of Boulder, Colorado. These two firms are jousting over intellectual-property rights, and each has been forging corporate alliances in a bid to capitalize on RNAi's potential. 7/28/2006 Lab on a chipFree public access From Nature. It contains several nice review articles on 'lab-on-a-chip', a promising future in many fields such as chemical synthesis, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals etc.
Insight: Lab on a chipVol. 442, No. 7101 pp367-418 The ability to perform laboratory operations on small scales using miniaturized (lab-on-a-chip) devices has many benefits. Designing and fabricating such systems is extremely challenging, but physicists and engineers are beginning to construct highly integrated and compact labs on chips with exciting functionality as outlined in this Insight. The collection also highlights recent advances in the application of microfluidic-chip-based technologies such as chemical synthesis, the study of complex cellular processes and medical diagnostics.
7/9/2006 Crab CatchingIt has been a while since we started thinking of crab catching this year. Finally we planned the event on today. It is a cloudy July day with temperature not too high. When the world cup game between Germany and Portugal was almost finished, we left for Island Heights to meet the crabs. It’s about 4:30pm on a Saturday afternoon and the traffic is not too bad. With chatting and music, it did not take long for us to get to the destination although the physical traveling time is about an hour. We took out chicken legs, cut several holes into the meat, tied them to ropes, and threw the chicken legs into the water. When the rope looks tightened, a crab (s) is eating the meat and trying to take away the meat. We would tug the rope little by little very carefully until we see the chicken legs or the crab(s) that is eating the delicious chicken. A net will be quickly put in the way that the crab (s) would retreat and the crab(s) would fall into our hands. If a crab is too small (smaller than 4.5 inches), it would be put back into its home and enjoy the sea life. They are a lot of small naughty crabs that kept six of us very busy. They would come to eat the chicken, get caught, be put back into the sea, and come back to eat the chicken. We as the crab catcher enjoyed watching them biting the chicken and catching them. Yet after a while we got annoyed by those little naughty. The weather was very beautiful with breeze and we enjoyed the view. An old man came to us asking if we had a badge for crab catching… We did not have any and had to buy two badges from him in order to continue crabbing there. It sucks to pay $10 to catch crabs on a free bay. After about an hour and a half, we only caught 6 qualified crabs, one for each of us which is not too bad. It was already 7:30pm. So we left for home. Since we did not have many crabs, we decided to dine out at a Chinese restaurant and got full stomach. After the dinner, we came back to my place to watch a movie while enjoying two rounds of deserts (Korean seafood pancake and Tiramisu) which was vow vow. Finally came the steamed crabs, one for each. Though it tastes veli good, I have to say that the process of crab catching is much more enjoyable than that of crab eating. Process is typically more important and enjoyable than result in life.
